The Drowning, an FPS that can be played with just two fingers, has finally been released for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. The game is available for free from the iTunes App Store. It has been developed by veteran developers who have earlier worked on games like Battlefield 1943, Command and Conquer: Tiberium Alliances and Battlefield Online.
The developers want to create a game that has console-level quality, but don’t exactly want to recreate the same control scheme, since it would be quite unwieldy on touch devices. “I would emphasize caution about the idea that what we’re trying to do or what we should try to do is replicate the experience of the PC or console shooter, because I don’t think we can ever do that in the same way that a console shooter can’t ever replicate the feeling of playing a light gun arcade game like House of the Dead,” developer Ben Cousins told Polygon . “They’re completely different experiences.
Kill some zombies today!
“What we’re about doing is creating a game which is in the first person, where you are shooting things, you’re able to freely move around the environment, so it ticks a lot of the boxes of a PC and console shooter, but it doesn’t try to replicate it.”
While it does have its own unique control scheme, which makes full use of iOS devices’ multi-touch capabilities, the developers have also included on-screen controls for those who preferred them.
The game features micro-transactions. Unlike other games, though, you won’t be able to simply buy weapons. Instead, you can buy items that boost your chances of finding parts to make new weapons. There are going to be 50 weapons in the game, and each one will be upgradable. “Even if you’re a paying player you’ve got to play the game to get stuff,” Cousins said. “There’s a vast amount of content available to both free players and paying players.”
