The iPhone 6 may have not have broken records in India yet, but looks like Apple has managed to sell all the 55,000 units it had claimed to have shipped in order to meet the demand during the Diwali shopping season.
Apple started rolling out the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus in India from October 17 midnight. The Hindustan Times newspaper has reported that the phones went out of stock within 72 hours, meaning that Apple may have sold out all the 55,000 units it had shipped before the launch in India. Maple, one of the authorised Apple resellers in India, confirmed that they are out-of-stock for all iPhone 6 models. However, you can still make an order and collect your iPhone within two to three days.
Contrary to physical stores, online retailers such as Amazon and Infibeam still tell you that the iPhone 6 is “In stock”. Amazon even guarantees a one-day delivery for all iPhone 6 models. Which leaves us to question how many iPhone 6 units Apple has actually sold in India and whether it has exhausted the 55,00 units it had claimed to have shipped to the country.
Some sources reported Apple had received more than 25, 000 pre-orders through its network of stores and multi-brand chains such as Reliance Digital, Croma, and online retail stores such as Infibeam. In contrast, China received over 20 million pre-orders .
Apple announced that it has sold over 10 million iPhone 6 units within three days after its global launch. While the iPhone made a rather late entry to the Indian market, grey market handsets started selling around the same time as the US at prices is excess of Rs 1 lakh.
The iPhone 6 reached the market at the same time as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 , which is touted to give a the iPhone 6 Plus (the larger of the two iPhones) a run for its money . To add to that, the Diwali season means prices for other flagship smartphones have also seen a tremendous drop, which might affect iPhone 6 sales.
