India-based gaming company, Octro, has raised $15 million or Rs 90 crore from Sequoia Capital India.
Octro is best known for its multi-platform game Teen Patti, which is a big hit in India, on the Google Play Store. The eight-year old company started as a mobile internet communications venture, but pivoted to gaming two years later, reports The Economic Times .
Octro is known for developing online versions of popular card games such as lotto (aka bingo or tambola), flash and rummy. These are played by nearly two million gamers across the world. Its games are also among the top ten grossing apps on both Google Play Store as well as Apple App Store.
This also marks, Sequoia Capital India’s first funding in the gaming sector. Co-founder Saurabh Aggarwal told the paper’s website, “We fought hard for six years, decided we lost the battle and gathered our troops. “ Prior to Octro, Aggarwal also co-founded PDAapps Inc, and developed technology behind integrated instant messaging (IM) service called VeriChat.
Reports last week claimed that Sequoia, best known for its early-stage investments in companies such as Google and WhatsApp, had raised $530 million for its fourth India-focused fund. Though intended for India, it will also look for opportunities in Southeast Asia, and aims at investing primarily in technology, consumer and healthcare sectors.
Octro plans to use the funding to add new titles and expand to other genres and geographies. It also plans to increase the work strength, doubling the number of employees in the next six months.
