One of Take-Two's most successful titles, Red Dead Redemption, might be getting the sequel. According to GameSpot, at a recent earnings call, Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick talked about permanent franchises for the company, and hinted that Red Dead Redemption could be one of these.

By permanent, Zelnick talks about games that are released over long periods of development time and people spend months, if not years, playing. For example, Zelnick cites the Civilization and Grand Theft Auto franchises.

"It's been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that's the Red Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilization, for example," Zelnick said.

Zelnick also talked about how Take-Two's studios have a different approach to building franchises than other studios. Companies like Activision and Ubisoft focus on a new game in their franchises each year, believing that the franchises only have a limited amount of time before they fall out of favour.

"Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises, that's the unique goal in the industry. Our competitors do not see it that way. Our competitors' view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing, so you better make hay while the sun shines," Zelnick said. "Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent franchises. Outside of our business you can look at James Bond, for example."

Red Dead Redemption is one of the most critically acclaimed games of the console generation, with many proclaiming it to be one of the best games on both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3. It was released in 2010 and was praised by almost everyone. It is a spiritual successor to 2004's Red Dead Revolver.
