Take it easy! Motorola will not kill smaller Moto E or Moto G smartphones

A few days ago,  Lenovo chief Chen Xudong made a few announcement regarding Motorola which seem to have been ‘misunderstood’. Even though reports claimed that Moto G and Moto E were to be discontinued, a Motorola representative has reportedly said, “Although we are simplifying the combined Motorola and [Lenovo] portfolio, we have no plans to retire Moto G, our most successful smartphone, or Moto E.” The representative also stated that the Moto G has been a ‘huge win’ for the company and discontinuing it would be a strange decision. These speculations were based on the fact that Motorola had stated that it would focus on its Moto and Vibe range overall. According to the report , Motorola Chief Operating Officer Rick Osterloh said, “We’ll slowly phase out Motorola and focus on Moto.” This does not imply that Motorola will be gone for good but instead, the company will attach the ‘Moto for Lenovo’ label on its high-end smartphones and will in turn, unify its budget smartphones under its ‘Vibe’ brand respectively. In addition, Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing said, “It’s our treasure. We plan to not only protect the Motorola brand, but make it stronger.” According to the report, the decision is likely a play to use the Moto lineup, which is popular with Android enthusiasts, to get people more acquainted with the Lenovo brand. Lenovo chief also added a few other details regarding the upcoming devices. He stated that all phones this year will have at least a 5-inch screen and the company will no longer invest time in 4.7-inch displays. Also, Lenovo and Motorola both will merge interfaces into a brand new UI, which we will see in 2017. Spilling more beans on the upcoming smartphones, Xudong added that Moto devices will be targeted at the high-end market and the Vibe series will target affordable/budget smartphone segment.
