Syria Flips Off Switch on Internet

The Syrian government is third in line to cut its people off internet recently, the first and second of course being Egypt and Libya. The Freedom House says that they’ve done this to hinder Syrians’ access to information and to prevent the outside world knowing the violent campaigns that the government is undertaking. The government has shut down both internet and cell phone service.

The majority of internet is provided to Syria by one provider and is brought over by a submarine cable from Cyprus. Therefore, shutting down the internet wasn’t a difficult task. The government in acts of desperation have killed 1,100 Syrians (40 just yesterday) and jailed another 10,000. Therefore, like the end of Mubarak’s regime and the Libya regime, Syria turned off its people’s connection to each other and the rest of the world.
