Steam hacked, credit card details may have been compromised

Steam, the popular game delivery platform on Valve has been hacked and there’s a chance that credit card information may have been compromised. This is a similar incident to that of the Sony PSN hacking incident. The post put up on the Steam forum stated that the forums were hacked on Sunday, 6th November. The hack might have involved more than defacing the forum. The database had details such as the user names, purchased games and encrypted credit card information. Valve isn’t totally sure at the moment, if the encrypted credit card information was also taken. However, they’ve warned users to keep an eye on their credit cards. The next step in the process would be to ask all users to change their passwords, the next time they log in. The passwords used on Steam are different from those used for the Steam Forums. Changing both passwords is recommended, though.

A repeat of the Sony PSN incident?

Steam has been used by many game publishing companies to sell their titles online. Users are able to buy titles by simply entering their credit card details after selecting the game they want. The game is then downloaded to the user’s PC using the Steam software. The Steam forum is still offline and is expected to be brought back online shortly.
