ST-Ericsson coming to MWC with a 3GHz smartphone chipset

ST-Ericsson has announced a beast of an SoC, which the company will demonstrate at Mobile World Congress next week.

The new 3GHz eQuad NovaThor L8580 is one of the few true system-on-a-chip just like Qualcomm’s processors and as such comes complete with a baseband radio and a full smartphone platform integrated with multimode LTE radio that has embedded Carrier Aggregation functionality.

President and CEO Didier Lamouche called the CPU a disruption “for the wireless industry by combining some of the most advanced technologies on the market, including STMicroelectronics’ 28nm FD-SOI process technology, to deliver a real industry breakthrough in terms of speed, power consumption and overall performance.”

He added that the company focussed on innovation in cases of real-world use and delivered a ModAp (Modem + APE) that lets apps run significantly faster – up to 35 percent faster. The GPU and multimedia accelerators run 20 percent faster. “With the NovaThor L8580, ST-Ericsson is bringing speeds normally reserved for the PC market to mobile devices,” Lamouche added.

The initial commercial version of the NovaThor L8580 will integrate an eQuad 2.5GHz processor based on ARM Cortex-A9, a powerful Imagination PowerVR SGX544 GPU running at 600Mhz and an advanced multimode LTE modem.

The NovaThor L8580 supports 3GPP Release 10, LTE category 4, with downlink speeds up to 150Mbps. It supports LTE-FDD, LTE-TDD, HSPA+, GSM and TD-SCDMA in the same chipset as well as VoLTE and HD voice. With up to 17 bands in the same device and a single radio for Carrier Aggregation, the L8580 delivers a simple and cost-effective solution to manufacturers looking to bring down costs and build global LTE smartphones.

“In addition to speed and multiband support, the NovaThor L8580 consumes 35 percent less power than rival architectures at comparable high frequencies. And last but not least, the L8580’s ground breaking 0.6V low power mode consumes 50 percent less power at 1GHz,” Lamouche said. The company claims the new SoC will redefine the active standby experience for users while adding hours of battery life.

The complete platform includes outstanding multimedia performance and pre-integrated connectivity with support for Bluetooth, GNSS (GPS+ GLONASS), FM, WLAN, WiFi Direct, Miracast and NFC. With ST-Ericsson’s connectivity solutions, CG2905 and CW1260, the platform comes optimised for wireless radio co-existence and low power consumption.

Of course, we will be bringing you all the news from Barcelona when Mobile World Congress kicks off on February 25.
