Sony Xperia Tablet Z coming to India in May

Sony yesterday revealed during the Xperia Z’s announcement that the Xperia Tablet Z will be hitting Indian shores in May. The Tablet Z was first shown off in Japan following CES and it was launched recently in the US after being announced at MWC.

The Tablet Z is based on the same design philosophy as its smartphone sibling, the Xperia Z. It brings a water-proof and dust-proof casing and a super-slim body, while still packing internals that could rival other high-end tablets. The tablet features Sony’s OmniBalance design, which, the company claims, makes the device much easier to handle. The tablet is a cinch to hold and does not wobble even when you’re holding it by one of its corners using only two fingers.

The Xperia Tablet Z is powered by the same Snapdragon S4 Pro SoC that ticks inside the Xperia Z and ZL. That translates to four Krait cores clocked at 1.5GHz each. Graphics are powered by an Adreno 320 GPU, and the tablet has 2GB of RAM. It has Sony’s customised UI running on top of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, but the customisations are not as heavy as one would see on a TouchWiz-running Samsung tablet.

The tablet has a 10.1-inch capacitive LED-backlit LCD with a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, but there is some confusion on the final resolution of the model that will be coming to India. The Sony staff present at the event said the display would have a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. We have reached out to Sony to clear the confusion and will update this story as and when Sony responds.

Sony has employed the Mobile Bravia Engine 2 to enhance colours and increase clarity when viewing images or videos on the tablet. All that display goodness is protected by a shatter-proof glass and scratch-resistant coating.

There’s 16GB of internal storage, which can be further expanded up to 64GB using microSD cards. The tablet’s infrared blaster allows users to remotely control their televisions, other Sony devices and products from other manufacturers.

Xperia Tablet Z has LTE connectivity and support for Cat3 LTE, which means download speeds will be maxed out at 100Mbps on 4G networks. It also has support for HSPA+ and GPRS/EDGE, but voice calling is not included in the package. As far as Wi-Fi connectivity goes, the tablet supports dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n bands. A microUSB port with MHL support, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC round out the other connectivity options.

There’s an 8.1-megapixel on the rear, which shoots HDR videos just like the Xperia Z, besides face and smile detection, 1080p video recording and touch focus. The 2.2-megapixel front-facing camera can shoot 1080p videos.
