Sony unveils the Xperia Z1 f, a 4.3-inch version of the Xperia Z1

Sony has finally launched the new Xperia Z1 f on the NTT DoCoMo network in Japan. The Z1 f, earlier known as the Honami mini and the Z1 mini, is a variant of the company’s current flagship, the Xperia Z1, and comes packed with many of the features, albeit in a smaller form factor.

From what can be seen, it looks like the major difference between the two phones is the screen size. While the Z1 comes with a 5-inch LCD display with a pixel resolution of 1920x1080, the Z1 f sports a 4.3-inch display sporting a pixel resolution of 1280x720. While the difference doesn’t sound like much, there should be one in making the new phone more compact and easier to use with one hand. It should also be noted that the smaller device comes with the same Triluminous display with the X-Reality engine. The device is 9.4mm thick and weighs in at 140 grams. You can have a look at what Sony has to say about the device in the promotional video below:

Internally, Z1 f comes with many of the specifications seen in its bigger sibling. There is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC with a 2.2GHz quad-core CPU and an Adreno 330 GPU, coupled with 2GB of RAM. The device comes with 16GB of internal memory with scope for expansion up to 32GB via a microSD slot. On the back of the phone, you can see the same 20.7-megapixel EXMOR sensor seen on the Z1, and there is also a 2.2-megapixel front shooter. In terms of connectivity, while there is only mention of Bluetooth support so far, it is assumed that the usual suspects like Wi-Fi and GPS have also been integrated. Like the other recent launches from Sony, the Z1 f is also waterproof and makes use of glass and aluminum for the body. Rounding up the offering is a 2,300mAh battery.

Here’s a quick look at the specifications of the Sony Xperia Z1 f:

  • 4.3-inch Triluminous display with the X-Reality engine, 1280x720 pixel resolution
  • Bluetooth, Wi-Fi
  • 20.7-megapixel primary EXMOR sensor camera, 2.2-megapixel front camera
  • 16GB internal memory, expandable up to 32GB via microSD slot

The device, so far, is only available for the Japanese market, and there is no word yet on an international launch. Hopefully, Sony will address that soon, because  at least from the specifications sheet, the device looks like a good compact one device that comes with high-end features.
