Sony wants a slice of that Fast and the Furious money, it seems. According to The Wrap, the company seems to be ready to adapt its popular racing simulation series Gran Turismo into a movie. The supposed adaptation will be helmed by Producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti of Fifty Shades of Grey fame.
The Gran Turismo series has been massively successful for Sony, and some would even go as far as calling it a console-seller, since many people got their hands on the PlayStation 3 just to play Gran Turismo 5. The series has always had great attention to detail with its large line-up of licensed cars and race tracks. It has also been a hardcore simulation game, punishing players for even the tiniest mistakes.
How does one go about turning this into a movie?
How Sony plans to adapt Gran Turismo into a movie is the confusing part. The games have never had any focus on the narrative, instead simply opting to throw players into races. This fact alone makes this report sound slightly dubious. We suggest taking the news with a pinch of salt.
Another game series making its way to the big screen is the Need for Speed franchise. We had learned last year that DreamWorks Studio had been working on a movie adaptation for NFS. The movie is slated for a February 2014 release and will be written by George Gatnis, produced by John Gatnis (Red Steel) and directed by Scott Waugh (Act of Valor).
Need For Speed is the first major project expenditure DreamWorks has made since the company came out of suspended animation while waiting for Reliance to invest cash in a re-up. The studio acquired the movie rights for the Need for Speed series only last month. There is no indication of why the movie is being fast tracked. EA and DreamWorks explained during their joint announcement that the film adaptation would be “a fast-paced, high-octane film rooted in the tradition of the great car culture films of the 70s while being extremely faithful to the spirit of the video game franchise”.
