Sony Might Launch the PSP2 this Month

It wasn’t all that long ago that Sony Gaming Chief Kaz Hirai came out and spoke about the PSP2 and what it might offer gamers. Now it seems Sony are priming themselves for a January 27 launch of the next generation of Playstation Portables, the PSP2, in Tokyo.

Come hither

Rumours about the PSP2 have been making their rounds for quite a while now, with some stating the device will boast of a quad-core Cell processor, which will basically be a toned down version of the processor that powers the Playstation 3. It might also be a touchscreen device and have a trackpad at the back. There’s absolutely nothing backing these rumours up though, so take them with a pinch of salt.

Funnily enough, this could mean that the ultra-secret PSP2 will launch before the Xperia Play (PSP Phone), which has been leaked to hell and back the past few days. The phone is expected to be launched at the Mobile World Congress at Barcelona in February. The timing is also strategic because the launch might come just around a month before the PSP2’s archnemesis - Nintendo’s 3DS - releases in Japan. Might Sony be trying to knock some wind out of the 3DS release’s sails?

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD

Sony have been unsurprisingly tight lipped about the whole affair, but they haven’t come out and denied the possibility yet so there’s still hope. If the rumours are true, however, I just hope Sony don’t make the same mistake they made way back at the original PSP’s launch of pricing it too high. With the PSP getting destoryed by the DS last generation, Sony will be praying for a role reversal this time. We, on the otherhand, can only wait and watch to see how it all turns out.
