Sony launches world's first 4K video download service

Sony has launched a new service that allows users to download 4K Ultra HD videos. Titled Video Unlimited 4K, the service has an ever-expanding library of native ultra HD movies and TV shows. At launch, the library has 70 full-length movies and TV shows. The company expects more than 100 videos to be added to the library before the end of the year.

Currently available on the service is TV show Breaking Bad. The list of movies includes Moneyball, Think Like a Man, Premium Rush, Ghostbusters, The Amazing Spider-Man, Funny Girl, The Guns of Navarone. It will eventually also have more recent movies such as Elysium, This is the End and After Earth.

Video Unlimited 4K will offer customers the option to rent and purchase content for download on Sony’s 4K Ultra HD Media Player (FMP-X1) for playback on Sony 4K Ultra HD televisions. Owners of the Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player will receive updated content over the Internet, enabling them to rent or purchase the latest entertainment.

The cost for TV episodes is $3.99 (Rs 263 approx), while feature films start at $7.99 (Rs 527 approx) for a 24-hour rental, or $29.99 (Rs 1,980 approx) for a purchase. Select purchased titles include an UltraViolet digital version of the movie or TV show.

To coincide with the debut of the Video Unlimited 4K service, Sony has also expanded its 4K Ultra HD TV line-up with the addition of the X850A series, available in 55 and 65-inch screens (models XBR-55X850A and XBR-65X850A). The new X850A incorporates a slim bezel and lacks the integrated magnetic fluid speaker system present in the X900A series.

The Video Unlimited 4K download service is now accessible when using the Sony 4K Ultra HD Media Player (FMP-X1) with Sony XBR-55X900 and XBR-65X900A Ultra HDTVs and the soon-to-be-shipping XBR-55X850A and XBR-65X850A models.
