Sony Honami could be called Xperia Z1 at launch

There is a lot of news about Sony’s soon-to-be-announced smartphone, the Honami. Starting the list is the official name of the phone. There was a lot of speculation of the phone possibly sporting the name i1, according to Phone Arena. That guess seems to be off by a couple of letters, though. New information has now come in, which suggests that the Sony smartphone may instead settle on the name Z1.

Looking back at the company’s track record, there are a lot of Z-bearing smartphones in Sony’s stable. These include devices like the Xperia Z, the Xperia ZL and the 4.6-inch ZR. The most recent to join the list is the 6.4-inch Xperia Z-Ultra. Thus, the assumption that the “Z” letter may feature in Sony’s next offering seems a plausible one. A tweet from xda-developer, DooMLoRD, seems to agree with this by saying that the “Xperia Honami might be called Z1 (Z One)”.

And the story doesn’t end there. A test version of the smartphone has managed to find its way into the hands of one tester who was kind enough to share some more insights about the phone. The tester, according to posts on hardwarezone, confirms that the camera is infact a branded G Lens, but the tester doesn’t see a “wow factor” in it. This cannot be ascertained yet as it is advisable to wait for the retail unit to come out before passing judgment.

The tester has also said that metal power button on his version is much smaller than the one on the Xperia Z and the phone is a bit heavy, almost as heavy as a Z-Ultra. The test version also seemed to be a bit thicker, which the tester attributes to the size of the battery. The 5-inch Triluminous display was confirmed, but the tester reported that the display seems to have poorer colours and contrast when compared to the Z Ultra. This is still hearsay, though, and the retail piece needs to come out before any confirmed observations can be made.

Rounding up the information being offered was a side-by-side comparison between the Honami and the Z Ultra. According to the tester, the “Z Ultra is much better whereas Honami is whiter/brighter. But take it with a grain of salt as I think the firmware in Honami is old.” There has been word that Sony is be planning a September 4 announcement in Berlin. Xperia fans have to wait only a few more weeks to get the official word from the company.
