Whenever anyone mentions Symbian Series 60, they’re talking about a Nokia Smartphone, even though other manufacturers have had their own S60 phones, such as Siemens. Similarly, when one says UIQ, it’s difficult to think of any phone other than a Sony Ericsson Smartphone. It seems Sony Ericsson just figured out that it would make more sense to buy out UIQ rather than pay them licensing fees, so they’ve gone ahead and decided to acquire the Swedish Symbian-owned company for a yet another undisclosed sum.
Even after the formalities are completed, UIQ will still continue to exist on its own, and will also continue to license the platform to existing and other manufacturers.
