It took them almost a whole year, but the follow up to one of the most popular Smartphones from Sony Ericsson has finally landed in India.

An upgrade to the ageing P910i, the P990i features tri-band GSM/GPRS as well as UMTS/3G/WCDMA network connectivity, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Infrared for local connectivity, a 2-megapixel digital camera in addition to a VGA camera for video calling on 3G networks, a 2.8-inch QVGA (240x320) touch screen, 60MB internal memory, Memory Stick PRO Duo and Memory Stick Duo card support, and an FM radio tuner with RDS (Radio Data Service).

The camera lets you record video upto 30fps, leading to smoother video clips. The Sony Ericsson P990i offers a similar flip down numeric keypad as the P910i, but the QWERTY keypad is not on the flip down keypad. Instead, it is integrated into the phone body right under the screen, like the M600i.

While the spec sheet sounds quite comprehensive, savvy users will note the glaring lack of EDGE network support, which means the phone’s internet connectivity in India will be limited to just GPRS for the time being, as there are no 3G networks available.

The Sony Ericsson P990i will retail for an MRP of around Rs 37,000 and is already available off the street for around Rs 33,000.
