Sony announces new lineup of free games for PlayStation Plus subscribers

While the online component for Sony’s console, the PlayStation 3, is free, Sony had started a premium subscription based service for the console. Those who subscribe to the service, named PlayStation Plus, get a lot of goodies, including discounts on many games and a bunch of games every month for free. Sony has announced what games will be available for this month on its PlayStation blog.

One of the major games you will be getting as part of the PlayStation Plus subscription is what is arguably heralded as one of the best games to come out for the current generation of consoles, Red Dead Redemption. Red Dead Redemption will be available for download until the 2nd of October. The game puts you in the shoes of John Marston, in the wild west  in the year of 1911. The plot of the open world game revolves around Retired Outlaw John Marston, now living with his wife and child. He had a quiet existence, until something went terribly wrong. An agent of the law, Edgar Ross, has kidnapped his family in order to coerce Marston to hunt down his former partner, Bill Williamson. Williamson left Marston to die when they were still bandits. Now Marston is given a chance to settle the score.

The next game in the list, downloadable from 12th September to 4th December is Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The sidescrolling beat ’em up is has a very retro graphics style, remniscient to the likes of games played on the SNES, and is one of the rare movie tie-in games that is actually good. The plot of the game revolves around Scott Pilgrim trying to earn the right to date a girl named Ramona, by fighting off her seven evil exes.

In a similar vein, the reboot to the classic NES side-scrolling beat ‘em up – Double Dragon – will be available for download. Sony has not mentioned when exactly the game will be available, but it will be available soon.

The last game for subscribers of PlayStation Plus this month will be Machinarium. The indie darling is an adventure game with hand-drawn graphics, set in an oddball world where robots are the dominant life form. The game features some beautiful art direction along with some of the most logical puzzles in an adventure game in recent times.

Along with this, Sony is also discounting the price for a year’s subscription of PlayStation Plus. From 5th September to the 19th, a 365-day subscription to PlayStation Plus will be available at a 25 percent discount, which brings the price to around Rs 2,200. Sony has also pointed out that annual subscriptions stack, so those who have already subscribed to the service can take advantage of the discount.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
