Snapchat beats Twitter to be 3rd most popular app among 18-34 year olds

What apps are millennials (the groups between 18 to 34) using? Facebook, Instagram and then Snapchat.   According to a comscore report, messaging app Snapchat has left Twitter and is now the third most used social media app among the millennial group - 18 to 34 year olds in the US. The report notes, that Facebook is still the most popular social media app with 75.6 percent people, followed by Instagram with 43.1 percent users and then Snapchat with 32.9 percent users.   This rise is even more spectacular if you consider the fact that comScore had noted that Snapchat only had a close to 12 percent user base in November 2013.   What’s important in these numbers is that Snapchat is now more in use than Twitter (23.8 percent user base), Pinterest (17.9 percent), Google plus (18 percent), Vine (10.7 percent) and Tumblr (6.3 percent).   The report also notes that in the 18-24 year olds age group Snapchat was already well past the typical critical mass threshold (it has reached close to 50 percent penetration in this age group in the period of April 2013-June 2014) and that in the 25 to 34-year-olds age group, it’s popularity is growing.   Last year there were reports that Facebook wanted to buy Snapchat (for close to $3-4 billion) but founder and CEO Evan Spiegel rejected the offer. Facebook eventually bought WhatsApp for $19 billion , but given that Snapchat is doing way better than Twitter, Pinterest, other bigger services in the US, shows its real potential. Recently there were reports that Snapchat was in talks with investors including Alibaba and that the company would be valued at $1o billion.   Snapchat’s success is also the reason why Facebook launched it’s Snapchat rival not once but twice ( first it was Poke and now the recent Slingshot) . Instagram followed soon with l aunch of its own messaging app, Bolt.   But Snapchat has managed to hold onto to its popularity, especially in the younger crowd. And with the addition of new features like Our Story, where users can take a bunch of Snaps to create a narrative, the app has shown that it isn’t restricted to just sending ephemeral Snaps.  Read more about our review of Snapchat vs Slingshot here.
