Snap Inc's hardware product Spectacles is releasing very gradually in the US markets, with New York being the most recent recipient of the Snapchat store. The Spectacles priced at $130 and according a Twitter user, they have a hidden augmented reality feature.
Moshe Isaacian tweeted a video with the new hidden feature, that Snapchat isn't openly advertising. This feature is quite different from the AR filters that we already see in the Snapchat app.
According to this feature, after wearing the Spectacles when you point at the lettering on the protective case, it unlocks a filter. The unlocked filter shows floating bubbles which shows snaps from either people around you or those curated by Snapchat.
While the filter doesn't mean much in itself, it is interesting feature nonetheless. It could easily be integrated with the Live Story section of Snapchat, or be used for by marketers in the future.
So far, Spectacles are only available in the US in the form of pop up vending machines. Each user can purchase only up to two pairs of Spectacles at $130 each. Spectacles are dedicated hardware for taking point of view videos, that are saved as Memories in the application.
One of the best feature of Spectacles is its simplicity. Spectacles are sunglasses with a wireless video camera on one side and a ring of LED lights on the other, to indicate that a video is being taken. It is a very basic device, compared to other wearables or cameras meant for capturing memories.
