VoIP service provider, Skype has introduced a new version of its software for Mac, Skype 2.5 Beta, which offers SMS text messages and 10 way conference calling.
Skype users on Mac will now be able to send an SMS text message to any mobile phone number, worldwide, taken from the user’s SkypeOut contact list. The feature is aimed at providing more mobility and better reach, to Skype users, even when they are offline or on the move. The 10-way conference calling feature enables users to make free Skype calls to nine other contacts, but a fee will be charged for making conference calls to landlines and mobiles. Moreover, Skype users on Mac can now make a choice between headphones and speakers, while making and receiving calls.
Skype has also launched its first mobile VoIP service, in collaboration with mobile operator, 3 Group, as part of the new 3 Group X-Series service. The operator’s 14 million users will be able to access Skype’s mobile service in UK, followed by Ireland, Austria, Denmark, Italy, Australia, and Hong Kong. 3 Group X-Series service now has a flat rate for unlimited usage, but premium paid Skype services, SkypePeln and SkypeOut will be available to 3 mobile customers next year.
