VoIP provider Skype has three new Wi-Fi phones from Belkin, EdgeCore and SMC for sale on its website. The phones are embedded with Skype software and programmed to automatically synchronize to a Skype account, even when away from the PC. Skype has announced that it has also tied up with Netgear to sell its Wi Fi phones this month, with prices ranging from $189 to $300, although it is not clear if these phones will be able to switch between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.
According to analysts, Skype is targeting the rapidly growing $125.5 million market for WiFi networks in public places and homes throughout the US. With firms like D link, Linksys and Netgear stepping up, analysts feel the use of WiFi internet phone services are bound to double this year. Moreover, considering the competition, the handsets are due to be priced lower than $100 in a short while.
