Skype for India app coming soon, to work on low speed networks

Skype is gearing up to launch an all India-specific version as the company sees India as one of its future markets. The application has specially been built keeping India’s low internet speed in mind. The company also aims to target the country’s budget smartphone segment by introducing an app which will run well on low processor speed devices. This plan by the company has been put forward amidst an intense debate on Net Neutrality in India. In conversation with  Indian Express, Skype spokesperson Filipp Seljanko, revealed plans of an India-specific Skype app and stated that, “India’s 2G and 3G network, as well as the mix of phones in use, pose very specific challenges for us.” He adds, “The new application will be much lighter than the one now available, and will require far less computation resources and memory.” The Microsoft-owned company has decided to develop the app after their market research showed that competitors like Viber were managing to provide better services for mobile users in the country. The company is also working on incorporating their latest technology, HoloLens with Skype which will permit the users to actually see people they are calling in real time, added the report. The company is hoping that the new app will spur sales of Lumia and Nokia Asha handsets, which have the app preloaded on it. There has been no information provided as to when the new ‘Made for India’ app will arrive in the country.
