Google India has silently killed the music search service that it had launched in October 2010, according to multiple reports .
The service was launched in October 2010 and allowedIndian users to search and stream tracks from partner sites.
The google.co.in/music URL now redirects a user to the Google search page for India. Other pages throw up a 404 error message. The closure of the service has not been officially announced.
Google had shut down a similar music service in China last October but has since launched the service in different forms in other countries.
According to Medianama , the end of the service was imminent.
“Interestingly, when we had checked Google Music India last week, it seemed to work fine, although the site offered old catalogue, indicating that Google India had probably shelved the project sometime earlier,” said the website.
There has been no official word from Google on the issue yet.
This is the second such prominently launched music service in India that has been shut down in recent times. Earlier this year, online retailer Flipkart had shut down Flyte, its digital music store due to low sales.
