Seagate has announced that its Samsung HDD Business unit will soon start shipping its new Samsung Wireless media streaming device for mobile users. No, this is no typo, Samsung’s HDD Business unit was bought over by Seagate in 2011.   The Samsung Wireless drive, similar in concept to the Seagate Wireless Plus drives, will house a 1.5TB HDD, an 802.11 b/g/n Wi-fi chipset which will allow the drive to wireless stream content on mobile devices and a battery to power the drive when it’s being used wirelessly. It will be available globally for $179 (approx Rs 10,700). But the main USP of this drive is wireless streaming. The Samsung Wireless drive creates its own Wi-fi hotspot to which you connect your smartphone or tablet and stream content from the drive to your devices. The wireless drive can connect to up to five clients. It can even connect to your home or office Wi-fi network and pass through the internet connection to the clients its connected to.   It has a USB 2.0 as well as a USB 3.0 port on it. With the USB 2.0 port, you can charge your mobile devices using the battery provided with the Samsung Wireless drive. The battery of the Samsung Wireless is rated to stream for 7 hours. The Samsung Wireless gives those consumers a fitting accessory to carry with them. Consumers will now have the luxury of having all of their multimedia content with them everywhere they to go, to enjoy personally and share with family and friends,” said David Klenske, Product Line Director, Samsung HDD.   To give you a rough idea of its storage capacity in terms on amount of media content, you can store up to 750 movies, 375,000 MP3s, 425,000 photos in any combination. It supports Android 2.3 and up, Windows 8/7/Vista/XP SP2 and Mac OS X 10.6 or later.
