The San Diego Comic Con is in full swing, and one of the announcements made at the event has geeks giggling. According to Polygon, Fox Digital Entertainment has announced that a game based on the cult-classic sci-fi series Firefly is in development. The game is set to launch on iOS and Android devices and is scheduled for release in the summer of 2014.
The game is being developed by QMXi and Spark Plug Games. Players will take on the role of a ship captain who can hire a crew and lead missions. There is also a social aspect to the game that lets players engaging in space-trading with other players. The game, dubbed Firefly Online, features customisable ships and pick-up and play cross-platform and cross-device functionality.

“At QMx, we know firsthand how great and powerful a franchise Firefly is and how mighty the Browncoats are,” said Andy Gore, CEO of QMXi and Quantum Mechanix Inc. “It has always been our mission to bring the Verse to life for our customers in every way possible. The idea of creating an interactive experience where fans can have their own Firefly adventures – well, that’s just too shiny for words.”
However, many fans are still apprehensive about the idea of the Firefly game, since it doesn’t seem to have any involvement of series-creator Joss Whedon. It also doesn’t help as there isn’t much of an overlap between fans of the TV show and fans of iOS and Android games.
Firefly was a sci-fi TV show that ran for one incomplete season before being cancelled. It revolved around Captain Malcom Reynolds and the crew of his ship—Serenity. The show is praised for its well-written character-centric stories and fleshed out world. It also had a distinct “cowboys-in-space” feel to it, thanks to the abundance of music playing that is commonly heard in spaghetti-western movies, as well as the level of technology shown (laser pistols still looking like old timey revolvers).
