Samsung vs Apple: Google, Facebook and other tech firms support Samsung

Looks like Samsung has a powerful group of supporters in its fight against Apple in the court. If a document found by Inside Sources is to be believed then Google, Facebook, eBay, Dell, HP and some other companies have submitted a ‘friend of the court’ brief supporting Samsung. Apple and Samsung have been embroiled in a legal tussle for years now. Apple had filed a lawsuit against Samsung for violating several properties like tap-to-zoom, single-finger scrolling, two-finger zooming and more. Both companies have also been battling for design patents.Samsung was asked to pay Apple a sum of $1 billion, while it was only this year that the amount was lowered to $548 million. However, Samsung is still fighting to reverse the decision by court. And, now, companies have also filed the friend-of-the-court briefing could set a bad precedent and lead to absurd results. According to the document found by Inside Sources, modern technology is made of multiple components and is very complex. If the use of components is based on lawsuits then every company is guilty of infringement. The brief states, “That feature—a result of a few lines out of millions of code—may appear only during a particular use of the product, on one screen display among hundreds. But the panel’s decision could allow the owner of the design patent to receive all profits generated by the product or platform, even if the infringing element was largely insignificant to the user.” Apple-Samsung have been a part of one of the most watched patent trials. Both sides have engaged in allegations and counter-allegations in courts across the world. A German court has already banned Samsung’s  Galaxy Tab 7.7 in Europe while a UK court ruled that the Samsung  Galaxy Tab 10.1 was not as a cool as the iPad and therefore not a copy.  Apple was asked to publish an ad on its site stating the same.
