Samsung unveils high-speed low-energy DDR4 memory

Samsung has unveiled a new generation of RAM at the Memory Solutions Forum 2013 in Seoul. According to Ciol, the company has primarily aimed the new fifth-generation memory towards data centres that use cloud computing. The company likes to call the new memory “green”, since it is supposedly much more efficient with its usage of power. It will reportedly help resolve data centre issues through dramatic improvements in performance and saving large amounts of power.

Young-Hyun Jun, executive VP of memory sales and marketing, Samsung Electronics, said, “We will continue to benefit society with the introduction of green IT technology in cooperation with our global partners to lead the global IT industry in creating greater shared value for customers.”

The fifth-generation memory includes Green DDR4, which is said to offer much higher speeds despite the touted lower amount of power consumption. The memory is a drastic improvement over the last generation’s DDR3, with data transfer speeds of 2,133 megabits per second compared to the latter’s 1,866 megabits per second. The company is reportedly also planning on expanding its DDR4 DRAM line-up, with modules eventually being capable of high transfer speeds of 3,200 megabits per second. This is 1.5 times faster than DDR4 memory modules found in present-day enterprise products.

The Green PCIe Solid State Drive enhances system efficiency with a reported improvement of up to 6 times when compared to a typical 600MB/s SATA SSD. This means transfer speeds of up to 4GB/s. The SSD is supposedly also capable of reducing the delay in data transfer by around 67 percent.

Ever heard of one of those people who just never seem to shut up about something? Shunal is like the nerd equivalent of that guy. Believe us when we say that he can go on talking about games and smartphones for hours on end. We do manage to find some insight in his insane ramblings though, and through his moronic facade, he does seem to know more than he lets on. Sadly enough, it always ends up being about gaming with him. Or stupid, stupid puns. see more
