At the press event in New York yesterday, Samsung made an interesting announcement, which we believe makes a lot of sense and is important. For one, it teased the Samsung Gear S2. Yet another wearable, one may think. After the Apple Watch and Google Wear, what could we expect? A refresh to the Galaxy Gear line-up was bound to happen. And it’s happening. But, this update is different! According to a report in the VentureBeat , “Samsung teased its new round smartwatch, the Samsung Gear S2, at its press event in New York today, saying it would trot out the new device at IFA in Berlin early next month.” The Samsung Galaxy Gear S2 is expected to run on Tizen. While Tizen hasn’t been able to make a mark in the devices space, just like similar attempts with webOS and bada by Samsung, it might just make perfect sense to test the potential of a new operating system with the newest tech product category out there. For now, it seems Samsung will continue its focus on Tizen, instead of switching to Google Wear. Given the space around which smartwatches are currently operating, the apps being developed for smartwatches are still fairly low. Also, it makes sense to have a more optimised operating system with minimal bloat. If Samsung is able to optimise Tizen to make for a good smartwatch operating system, it could hold the key to dominance in the space. The report further adds, “Samsung said at a Tizen developers event July 30 that the new device would feature a rotating bezel for navigating watch content and controlling watch functions. The bezel may be used for some of the same functions managed by the digital crown on the Apple Watch, i.e. zooming in and out of content and controlling specific movements in apps and games. The rumor mill says the new Tizen watch will ship with an Exynos 3472 dual-core chip, a 360 x 360 pixel display resolution, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, and a 250mAh battery.” It would interesting to note if Samsung would launch the Tizen powered Galaxy Gear S2 smartwatches in India. As is the case with most products, the pricing will be critical for an early dominance in the smartwatch market in India.
