Samsung’s latest Exynos processors boast of good performance and power efficiency, but they’re still to best Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 800 series. And now it seems the company wants to take things into its own hands. According to a report by Korean website, ETNews , the company is looking to make a processor based on its own architecture by redesigning ARM cores.
So far, Qualcomm and Apple are the only companies to come up with their own platforms after signing licensing deals with ARM. These companies take ARM’s processor designs and tweak them to suit their devices. However, while the Exynos processors are made by Samsung itself, they are based on architecture designed by ARM.

Could this processor’s successor be a custom-made chip?
Samsung already has a licensing deal with ARM, and probably wants to get its hands dirty and customise ARM’s processors to squeeze out better performance, higher power efficiency and improve the reference design. The report stated that 32 bit ARMv7 chips such as Cortex-A15 and Cortex-A19 as well as 64 bit ARMv8 architecture is included in Samsung and ARM’s contract. “The license on the 64 bit core is believed to be used for the development of server CPUs,” it reads.
The project will reportedly be led by Samsung’s R&D Center based in Austin, Texas. The new platform is said to focus on maximising bus performance between the CPU and the NAND flash and DRAM, which will lead to better data handling and power efficiency.
If this turns out to be true, we could expect the new architecture to feature on the Korean company’s flagship smartphones sometime next year.

He tends to take his job a little too seriously, so you may sometimes see him running around punching his colleagues in the arm for typos and grammar mistakes. Some of his favorite topics to find mistakes in are games and open source stuff like Linux, but he also maintains a fleeting interest in smartphones. He also loves Michael Jackson's Heal the World the same way a little girl loves cockroaches.
