Samsung in a major financial windfall for itself has snapped up a lucrative contract to provide chips for the Apple iPod. The earlier provider PortalPlayer has been dropped altogether. A spokesperson for Samsung said it would be providing the MP3 media processors for Apple’s next-gen iPods. Samsung already provides the NAND flash memory chips for the iPod. The move comes as a bit of a rude shock as until last week PortalPlayer had been the only company in the running to be the default supplier of the chips. Samsung along with this move consolidates its position as the worlds’ largest memory maker. Only last week it usurped Intel Corp to become the largest semiconductor manufacturing business in the world in terms of market value.
