Samsung to call its standalone VR headset Odyssey

Samsung’s plans of making a standalone headset that doesn’t require connections to smartphone or PC are known to all. Now leaked trademark filings in Korea (via SamMobile ) reveal that the upcoming device will be named Odyssey. The company filed for the registration of the device name as well as two logos showing “VR” written in stylised letters. The description reads ‘virtual reality game headsets’ and ‘virtual reality game software’. Besides these details, not much is known about the headset or how it compares to the current Gear VR, Oculus, Vive and others. But, it is known that the next-gen Gear VR is in the pipeline. A lot has already been said and written about how 2016 is the year of virtual reality. Strategy Analytics revealed that global virtual reality revenues are expected to reach $895 million this year. The report adds that out of the overall revenue, 77 percent will come from Oculus, HTC and Sony. However, the trio will account to only 13 percent of the volumes, says the report. It is the low-priced smartphone based VR systems that will dominate the space. Apart from leading tech giants, companies known for superior features at affordable prices, are also looking to churn out VR headsets. Xiaomi is reportedly working on a VR headset that is reportedly slated to launch sometime in August.
