Samsung Electronics has announced the launch of its latest in-house Exynos SoC, the Exynos 5 Series (7872) processor.
The SoC is aimed at powering the mid-range devices that Samsung will launch in the near future. According to the announcement, the company claims that this new processor will provide twice the single core performance when compared to its predecessor.
The SoC packs a hexa-core CPU that comes with two high-performance Cortex A73 cores clocked up to 2.0 GHz and four power-efficient Cortex A53 cores clocked up to 1.6 GHz. It is manufactured using the 14nm FinFET process.
The SoC packs an LTE modem that supports Category 7 for 300 Mbps downlink speed and Category 13 for 150 Mbps uplink speed. Both uplink and downlink support carrier aggregation to achieve such high speeds. Samsung has ensured that the processor packs support for “almost every network of 2G, 3G, and 4G” ranging from CDMA, GSM, TD-SCDMA, WCDMA, and LTE-FDD.
The company has added a GNSS receiver for global location positioning coverage in addition to the presence of the Wi-Fi, FM radio and Bluetooth 5. Moving to the image processing, the new processor comes with an improved Image Signal Processor (ISP) and Multi-Format Codec (MFC). The processor includes support for up to 21.7 MP camera sensor for both the front and back camera, in addition, to support for an iris camera sensor with up to 8 MP resolution. The addition of support for the iris camera sensor will allow for ‘enhanced authentication’.
Exynos 7872 comes with a hardware block for Smart WDR (Wide Dynamic Range) for single-shot wide dynamic range images.
The MFC adds FHD encoding and decoding with H.265 and H.264 codec at 120 fps. Last but not the least the SoC packs Mali G71 MP1 GPU for graphics-intensive tasks.
