Samsung has created a postage stamp-sized 512GB SSD

Hardware is getting tinier but at the same time faster and the latest product from Samsung proves that we are going to see incredibly small storage devices in the coming years. The company’s new VGA NVMe SSD called as the PM971-NVMe is a marvel that is said to be tiny but faster at the same time. Samsung’s new tiny super-fast SSD might just blow you away in terms of size, while a typical laptop or PC SSD measures close to 2.5-inches, this measures approximately a hundredth of a 2.5-inch SSD. The dimensions are 20mm x 16mm x 1.5mm with a weight of just a gram and the company has managed to cram in a 512GB LPDDR RAM, a Samsung controller and 16 48-layer 256-gigabit V-NAND flash chips.Even the speeds are incredibly fast as Samsung confirms that it will triple the performance of a typical SATA SSD. It will offer read/write speeds up to 1,500MB/s and the ability to move a full HD movie or a file size of 5GB in about 3 seconds.

This next generation SSD will not only help in creating lighter and even thinner devices including laptops and desktops, but this will also accommodate more space for other components in notebooks and ultrabooks like batteries. The only only possible drawback would be that these have to be soldered onto the motherboards which means they wont user-replaceable. These SSDs could easily fit into smartphones considering handset chipset makers bring in support for PCI-E devices, which is highly unlikely for at least a couple of years. Samsung has confirmed that it will manufacture the SSD in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB variants and will be available next month.
