Samsung launched the Galaxy S8 Active today at an unlocked price of $849.99 which is approximately Rs 54,100. The Samsung Galaxy S8 Active comes in a durable shockproof casing and a shatterproof display, characteristic of Samsung's Active lineup.
Other highlights of the S8 Active include a beefier battery which is now up to 4000 mAh. The back cover on the phone has a better, more secure grip and has a rugged look and feel.
Samsung claims that the smartphone is rated to survive immersion in water of up to 5 feet for as long as 30 minutes. The S8 Active has also passed MIL-STD-810G military grade testing which includes a subset of 21 specific environmental conditions, including extreme temperature, dust, shock, vibration, low pressure and high altitude.
The Galaxy S8 Active is currently up for pre-order in the US exclusively on AT&T Next for $28.34 which is approximately Rs 1,800 for 30 months to carrier subscribers before hitting stores on 11 August.
AT&T has also launched a number of launch offers with the phone. Buyers have the option of getting $500 (approximately Rs 31,800) off on a Samsung TV while purchasing the Galaxy S8 Active on AT&T Next and adding DirecTV as well. Other offers allow adding a Samsung Gear S2 for a price of $0.99 or the Gear S3 for $49.99 (approximately Rs 3,100) on a 2-year agreement on AT&T Next.
Lastly, the purchase can get buyers up to $200 (roughly Rs 12,700) in credits for exchanging an eligible smartphone.
In terms of other specifications, the Galaxy S8 Active is identical to the original Galaxy S8. The display a 5.8-inch QHD+ Super AMOLED panel with a resolution of 1440x2560 pixels with the same 18.5:9 ratio on the Galaxy S8. Underneath, it is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC with 4GB of RAM. The S8 Active comes with 64 GB of inbuilt storage with the option to expand further up to 256 GB via microSD.
Camera optics are also the same, such as a 12MP f/1.7 rear camera with autofocus and optical image stabilisation (OIS) and an LED flash. On the front, we get an 8MP sensor with autofocus. The S8 Active will run Android 7.0 Nougat with Samsung's TouchWiz UI.
