Google’s latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow flavour added the adoptable storage feature that allows users to format a microSD card as internal storage, giving the option to merge both and use as a single unit. Now, both LG and Samsung offer expandable storage options and both have decided to ditch this option. Yes, the Galaxy S7 and LG G5 won’t support Android adoptable storage.

According to Arstechnica , Samsung has put forth two reasons for not adopting this feature, both not convincing enough. Firstly, the company said microSD card slots are used to transfer data from a phone to another device, and making it a part of the internal memory could hinder that. This may be a case for some some users, but definitely not all. The company has also said that the Adoptable Storage is only meant for lower tier devices with 4 or 8GB of storage that require memory expansion.

“With adoptable storage, first of all the card may be erased the first time it is inserted into the device. This behaviour may be unexpected by many users and we don’t want our users to lose their files,” Samsung further told the news site.

Samsung’s reasons can’t be totally ignored. The company has re-introduced expandable memory after facing flak from consumers for letting go off this key feature. The company now offers up to 200GB microSD card support. It doesn’t want anything turning around it when it comes to the upcoming flagships that it pins its hopes on to bounce back into the mobile segment.
