Samsung Galaxy S Series crosses 100 million sales landmark

An elated Samsung has announced that the entire line of Galaxy S phone series has now crossed the 100 million sales landmark. The news of the sales landmark comes not long after Samsung announced that Samsung Galaxy S III’s sales had crossed 30 million, in November.

Samsung wrote on the Samsung Tomorrow Flickr page that the sales high had come merely two years and seven months after the launch of the first flagship Galaxy S phone. Since then, Samsung Galaxy S II, what the Korean electronics giant calls ‘the driving force behind Samsung Electronics’ rise to the top of the global smartphone market’, has sold over 40 million times in only 20 months.

The Samsung Galaxy S III has sold way faster at the rate of 30 million in five months and 40 million in seven months. The phone had hit a million target in only 50 days after its debut in May last year. Samsung had aggressively marketed its flagship Samsung Galaxy S III right from its launch and the effort seems to have paid off. The smartphone had been heavily advertised even during the Olympics in London in 2012. Just a little later, Samsung made the phone available in colours that went past the normal Blue and Marble White. In November, Samsung announced the availability of some more colour options such as Spiral Black, Garnet Red and Embassy Brown.

In December, it was revealed that in India alone, 10 million Samsung Galaxy devices had been sold since the launch of the first Samsung Galaxy S in June 2010. Samsung VP (Mobile) Asim Warsi said on the occasion, “Innovative devices like the Samsung Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and SIII, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Y have caught the imagination of customers and helped us democratise the smartphone experience in the Indian market. This has helped Samsung sell more than 10 million Galaxy devices in the Indian market since June 2010, when the first Galaxy device was launched.”

Though Samsung refrained from divulging details about which particular handset was the sales hero, Galaxy Y series, Note series and the S III have been cited as the ones to have contributed to more than 50 percent of the sales. Warsi continued on the issue, “Through our series of consistent Smartphone launches, Samsung has fuelled the growth of the smartphone market in India and has been a category leader since last year. Samsung’s portfolio of 13 Galaxy devices in the Indian market are priced between Rs 6,790 to Rs 39,990."

Meanwhile, the Galaxy series is set to receive a dual boost in the form of Samsung Galaxy S II Plus smartphone and Samsung Galaxy S III mini to be available in more colour options. The Galaxy S III mini, with this colour launch will be at par with its older sibling being available in Garnet Red, Onyx Black, Titan Gray and Amber Brown in addition to the original Ceramic White and Pebble Blue colours already available.

The Samsung Galaxy S II Plus has been in the news ever since images of the devices leaked last month and now Samsung has made the device official. The Galaxy S II Plus will run on Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean), which the company claims allows faster and smoother screen transitions. The smartphone will come with a UI featuring a new notification panel. It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual core processor and a 1,650mAh battery.
