Samsung’s 4 September IFA event in Berlin is likely to see the launch of the Galaxy Note III phablet. But another rumoured device that is generating a lot of buzz is Samsung’s smart watch called the Galaxy Gear.
Now trusted Samsung source, _ SamMobile _has confirmed that Samsung will introduce the Galaxy Gear watch along with the Note III. The report says that, the Galaxy Gear with the device name SM-V700 will act as a companion accessory for Samsung’s Galaxy phones, and it might have a flexibly display.
Previously Dutch website_ GalaxyClub _reported that Samsung filed a new patent with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in July for a new smartwatch.
The report said that isa more recent application than the previously surfaced name without the Galaxy designation and indicated thatthe device will run on the Android operating system_._
According to the patent document, the description for the device states,_Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages._You can view the patent here.
Associated Press had also reported that Samsung has applied for patents in both S-Korea and US and that drawings from a Samsung design patent approved in May show a watch-like design with a flexible screen that curves around the wrist.
Samsung had shown off its flexible display at CES 2013 in Las Vegas but its unlikely that the smart watch will have one.
As far as smart watches go, all the top tech companies from Apple to Google to Microsoft seem to be working on these. In fact research firm Canalys has predicted that over 5 million smartwatches will be shipped in 20134. The report by the firm states that over 330,000 smart watches were shipped in 2012, led by Sony and Motorola. In 2013, the entry of Pebble along with Sony should see over 500,000 units shipped, adds the report.
Smart watches and wearable computing devices are the future. So there is no reason why Samsung would want to be left behind in this market. However whether a smartwatch will be really launched or not…we’ll have to wait and see till 4 September.
