Samsung Electronics on Sunday announced the Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo smartwatches ahead of the Mobile World Congress, 2014. The biggest change when it comes to these two new smartwatches is that South-Korean tech giant has officially ditched Android and gone for home-grown Tizen OS. So what do the tech specs of the two smartwatches look? Here’s a quick look. Essentially both have the same specs, except that Gear 2 Neo doesn’t have a camera. Samsung Galaxy Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo have a 1.63-inch Super AMOLED screen with 320 x 320 pixels resolution. They have a 1.0 GHz Dual-core Processor. The camera is 2 megapixels with auto Focus in the Galaxy Gear 2. It is capable of full screen resolution pictures as well as recording in HD as well. Samsung has also equipped the camera to the main body of the Gear 2 instead of putting it on the strap. Both watches have 512 MB RAM and 4 GB total memory space. The battery is Li-ion 300mAh and according to Samsung it will last 2-3 days under typical usage and up to 6 days in low-usage. In terms of connectivity it has Bluetooth v4.0 LE, IrLED to ensure that the watches can be used as a remote for television sets that are supported. The fitness features include Heart Rate sensor, Pedometer, modes for running, Walking and Cycling, Hiking. There’s also another mode for sleep & Stress, which users can download. The sensors in the watches are Accelerometer, Gyroscope, Heart Rate. The watches allows users to take calls via Bluetooth, gets notification from SMS, E-mail, and linked Apps. There is also S Voice, Weather, Times, StopWatch, a scheduler among other things. The Gear 2’s dimension are 36.9 x 58.4x 10.0 mm and it weighs 68g. The Galaxy Gear 2 Neo’s dimensions are 37.9 x 58.8 x 10.0mm and it is slightly lighter than the Gear 2 at 55g. Both watches are dust and water resistant. Samsung Gear 2 and Gear 2 Neo are compatible with more than dozens of Samsung Galaxy smartphones at launch and will be available around the world starting from April. The Gear 2 is available in the following colours with changeable straps: Charcoal Black, Gold Brown and Wild Orange. Gear 2 Neo will come in Charcoal Black, Mocha Grey and Wild Orange. The home screen background, clock face and font are also customisable.
