Samsung comes clean on why the S7 Active isn't as waterproof as expected

The Samsung S7 Active is essentially a rugged version of the regular S7 with a larger battery. In recent testing, it was discovered that the phone wasn’t really as waterproof as claimed. Two tests conducted independently by CNET and Consumer Reports indicated that the Samsung S7 Active wasn’t as waterproof as was originally claimed. Samsung claimed that the device was IP68 certified, meaning that the device could withstand being submerged in water up to a depth of 5 feet with no issues. Consumer Reports tested precisely this factor and found the phone to be damaged. CNET dunked the phone in a bucket and in a pool and also found water damage. Samsung initially bristled at the accusation, insisting that the S7 Active was as water-resistant as specified and that all water-damaged devices would be replaced for free for the duration of the warranty period. On being contacted by CNET, Samsung eventually admitted to have discovered a fault in their production line that resulted in a batch of phones going out which weren’t water resistant to IP68 standards. Samsung issued the following statement to CNET, “We discovered an isolated issue to a production line that exclusively manufacturers the Galaxy S7 Active. The issue has been resolved. We have received very few customer inquiries and any owner with water damage will receive a replacement under our standard limited warranty.” Samsung is yet to confirm the number of affected devices and whether or not affected users will receive replacements.
