With smartphone life cycles being what they are, the pace of development never slows. Korean technology giant Samsung only recently unveiled this year’s flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S8, and reports are already surfacing of a Galaxy S9 and accompanying Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chip.

The report, published by The Investor, doesn’t reveal much, and only suggests that a new Qualcomm Snapdragon chip is being developed for the Galaxy S9. Apparently, either Samsung or TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd.) will manufacture the chip.

Snapdragon is a mobile platform that’s developed by Qualcomm for, well, mobile devices.

Qualcomm’s current flagship is the Snapdragon 835 platform, which first made its debut in the Galaxy S8. The chip will also make its way to a number of other devices later this year, notably in the Sony Xperia XZ Premium and the recently announced Xiaomi Mi 6.

The Snapdragon 835 is manufactured on a 10 nm process, which only Samsung has been able to employ on its fabrication lines. Judging by the report, it looks like TSMC will have the capabilities in time for the 845, if that is indeed what Qualcomm’s new chip is called.

The Investor apparently approached Samsung for comment, but received no response.
