American Idol host and Hollywood personality Ryan Seacrest has ventured into tech investment. Seacrest has co-founded and invested in a startup that will soon announce a physical keyboard accessories for the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5s.

The device, called Typo Keyboard, snaps on to an iPhone like a protective case and fits snugly below the phone's body. Yes, even though the name is short for “typographical error”, it has been designed to help you avoid such mistakes. The keyboard is supposed to make an appearance at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) to be held in Las Vegas next month and should be available soon after.

BlackBerry? Is that you?

If you’ve used a BlackBerry for the longest time before shifting loyalties to Apple and the iPhone, this keyboard could well be a godsend for you. It resembles a typical QWERTY on a BlackBerry device, down to the curve on individual keys. Typo Keyboard would pretty much turn your iPhone into Apple and BlackBerry’s love-child with the good genes from both parents. It's not yet clear how the home button function will be retained when using Typo.

AllThingsD reports that even while the company has declined to reveal the amount of funding, Seacrest and his co-founder may have invested over $1 million towards development and are expected to invest another $5 million. For those wondering how the Idol host got involved in this project, especially considering the many similar products in the market, the company says it was all a question of ease of use. Seacrest and his friends reportedly carry two phones, one for anything that involves typing such as emails and documents, and an iPhone for everything else. Clearly this wasn't good enough, which is how the idea for Typo came about.

The keyboard is slated to be available for the iPhone 5 and 5s initially, followed by other smartphone devices and tablets. At the moment, there's no indication that this will be restricted to iOS devices. You may start with the first world problems memes now.
