Russians Crack Apple iOS 4 Hardware Encryption

ElcomSoft, a Russia-based corporate security and IT Audit Company are claiming to have cracked the Apple’s iOS 4 hardware encryption that protects data on devices. They are also offering the software to anyone to do it. Before this software came out, those running iOS 4 software on their handset, have been safe and the encryption too strong for anyone to crack it. ElcomSoft have apparently created a toolkit that enables the retrieval of encryption keys from such a device. With these keys it’s possible to decrypt an image from any Apple mobile device.

Rumours Ahoy!

Cracked!

ElcomSoft has offered this toolkit to law enforcement agencies and security firms, but anyone can purchase this software to extract data from an Apple device. According to ElcomSoft one can gain access to the data stored on the device and this process doesn’t take long. Speaking on the software, Vladimir Katalov, ElcomSoft CEO says that this time around it’s not about iPhone backups. Backups created with iTunes software already contain a lot of data, but not quite everything that’s being stored or cached in iPhone devices.

In contrast, they were able to break into the heart of iPhone data encryption, providing their customers with full access to all information stored in iPhone devices running iOS 4. He went on to say that mobile forensic specialists are well-aware of the amount of valuable information stored in these devices. Before their discovery, there was no way to get full access to all of that data. He goes on to say that they are responsible citizens, and they don’t want this technology to fall into the wrong hands. Therefore, they made a firm decision to limit access to this functionality to law enforcement, forensic and intelligence organizations and select government agencies.
