Rumoured Nokia Lumia design revealed through patent designs ahead of MWC

This isn’t the first time and definitely won’t be the last when Nokia patents its handset designs before revealing them for all the world to see. A concept application filed by Nokia in December 2011 has finally been granted a design patent and images of what could be a forthcoming Nokia handset have been revealed.

Discovered by LiveSide, the design patent D675,587 is for one of Nokia’s Windows Phone devices and was spotted earlier in a Nokia Lumia concept video. The handset comes with an angled back reminiscent of Nokia’s hit Asha 205 phone and space for capacitive buttons in the front.

The leaked patent designs

The leaked patent designs

The images of this phone were surprisingly leaked way back in August 2011, even before the first Nokia Windows Phone, the Lumia 800, was announced. The design seems sleek and has a recognisable touch of Nokia and Lumia to it. It is quite possible, noting from the patent designs and the video leak, that the handsets displayed could be one and the same seeing the curvature of the back panel and how the camera seems to line up. If indeed the leaked video contains the same phone, the handset could be be available in yellow, purple and green-grey colours.

This handset could well join the likes of Nokia’s existing Lumia phones 920 and 820 that run Windows 8 and are selling like hot cakes currently. It must be noted that the Nokia Lumia 920’s design too had been leaked similarly in August last year. The device had actually been patented in December 2011 before being revealed.

Leaked images of the handset codenamed Nokia Phi had surfaced just before the Nokia World event. Russian Blogger Eldar Murtazin had revealed in a conversation with the website Obozrevatel.com that the device was made up of a similar unibody design that was found on the Lumia 800 and Lumia 900 devices from Nokia. The major point he mentioned was that it was going to be thinner and larger in comparison to these existing handsets, quite accurately.

With the Mobile World Congress just around the corner, a host of announcements are expected from the current blue-eyed company of the mobile world – Nokia. The most important announcement expected will be regarding a new handset that will boast of a “true” PureView Camera. The high-end handset codenamed EOS will boast a sensor similar to the one found on Nokia’s 808 PureView symbian smartphone.

The upgraded sensor for Windows Phone means the EOS will be ranged as a high-end Lumia, but not the flagship device, in the company’s range of smartphones for 2013. It was also reported that the EOS will have an aluminium body unlike the now-familiar polycarbonate shells found on recent Lumia Windows Phone devices such as the Lumia 920 and 820.

Nokia is also planning a Lumia 920 replacement in the form of the Catwalk that will also feature an aluminium chassis. The internal specifications of the Catwalk will be very similar to the current Lumia 920 and might be slated to be Nokia’s flagship 2013 smartphone. Work is also going on in developing another mid-range device that is expected to debut early this summer; it will most likely be the replacement for the current mid-tier Nokia Lumia 820.

Nokia is also building its own Windows RT tablet on the lines of the Microsoft Surface slate and this will debut in the first half of 2013. The rumoured tablet will have HDMI and USB ports along with a 10.1-inch display, but Nokia will be placing more emphasis on the battery-equipped keyboard cover. The cover provides a keyboard and a kickstand for the tablet and will have two USB ports for additional connectivity. The main tablet is rumoured to have a 10-hour standby time with fast charging. The tablet will also be launched under the Lumia brand of devices.

So with Nokia having a busy summer, can we see this patent being announced at the MWC too? The more the merrier, we say!
