Rovio and Sony join hands to make a new Angry Birds 3D movie

The Angry Birds are literally shooting to new heights, with Rovio’s new Angry Birds 3D movie being announced. While the games have seen world wide success with various versions launched on every app store you can think off, the francise is now all set to have its first feature film. Though many film studios sought after the global film rights in the last few weeks, Sony came up as the winner – the two companies will work on “Angry Birds 3D”, which will be released on July 1, 2016.

Slated as one of the most high profile deals of the year, the movie will have Rovio developing, producing and financing it while Sony will be releasing it worldwide. The Angry Birds addiction continues…

The franchise also launched a weekly Angry Birds Toons animated series back in March. The series was launched through multiple platforms including the Angry Birds apps as well as select video-on-demand channel providers, Smart TVs, connected devices and on select TV networks around the world. Effectively opening the world market for the 3D movie, Angry Birds Toons saw over 150 million views from the Angry Birds apps alone within the first six weeks.

With producers John Cohen and David Maisel – of Despicable Me and Iron Man fame, respectively – being roped in, it is pretty clear that Rovio has a golden goose that is going to be around for a while.
