RIM could start BBM music as early as next week

Research in Motion has seen its fair share of problems over the last few years. This is due to the drop in sales of their BlackBerry handsets with Apple and Android taking up their market share. One of the reasons for BlackBerry’s survival is their BlackBerry Messenger service (BBM) which has attracted users over all generations. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the Canadian smartphone manufacturer is said to be starting a music service that is designed to work with their BBM service.

This service could be a major boon to the company and it is reported that it could start as early as next week. Upon subscription, users could gain access to 50 songs at a time and could share the music with other subscribers via BBM. The service could be priced lower than $10 per month which will put RIM at an advantage over other services like Spotify or Rhapsody. The report goes on to mention that this service is not designed to compete with Apple’s iTunes or Spotify but intended for younger users to customize their phones.

RIM have already closed a deal with a major record label for this music service and are rumoured to be completing deals with three other major record companies. These companies are said to be Universal Music Group, Sony Entertainment, Warner Music Group and EMI Group Ltd. As of now details are slim on BBM Music with all parties involved keeping it under wraps until an official announcement is made.
