Revealed: Microsoft Hololens battery life and other details

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella called Hololens a ‘mind-blowing experience’ at its launch in January last year. While the headgear that creates three-dimensional images in the real world and lets people reach out and manipulate the virtual objects has been on many a wish lists, recently revealed details might put some off. According to a report by Petri , Bruce Harris, a Microsoft Technical Evangelist, shared details about Hololens at an event in Tel Aviv. The device will start shipping to developers this quarter but no announcements have been made yet when the device will be available to consumer or enterprise clients.

Harris shared that the Hololens is entirely wireless and can hook up to anything that uses Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Talking about the applications that can run on the Hololens, Harris informed that any universal application that currently runs on Windows 10 can work here. But the disappointing detail is battery life can run up to 5.5 hours and it drops down to 2.5 under heavy load.

Other details revealed include field of view – which is similar to a 15 inch monitor about two feet away. Harris added here that as manufacturing improves, the company will look at expanding field of view once it has some clarity on how the pricing is being accepted.

Microsoft will manufacture the device themselves but it is not being made in the US like the Surface Hub, Harris said in the Petri report.
