Doctors can now reduce the time needed for testing dementia down to 10 minutes using a new iPad app, according to Mashable. The process for doctors to test dementia originally took 3 years. Now, the iPad app, called Cantab, which was invented by Cambridge Cognition, has helped reduce that time span.
The word Dementia originally meant madness and comes from the Latin word “de”, which means without, and “ment”, which means mind. The medical condition signals a loss of global cognitive ability, which is usually seen in aging individuals.
Because basic skills like attention, memory, language and problem solving get affected by the condition, the app can definitely do a lot of good by pinpointing the problem in its early stages. Cantab uses technology developed from research conducted at the University of Cambridge.

According to the research technology, the app will provide doctors with test tracks scores for both functional impairment and mood. According to that, experts will be able to get a better understanding of what is going on with the patient and start the relevant treatment. Cambridge researchers are clear, though, that Cantab will help with the preliminary diagnosis, which helps to identify the problem, but will not be able to help with the correct treatment.
The iPad app is available for download to patients and features 20 languages, although it is not available in India yet. Keeping the privacy of its users in mind, the app allows users to encrypt test results so that they can safely be added to a patient’s dossier. According to the Mashable report, 10 practices in the UK have already picked the app up and are putting it to good use.
While technology has always helped to increase our creature comforts, it’s always good to see instances where devices can come to the aid of those who need help the most.
