Removing Akhilesh Yadav wallpaper does not cause laptops to crash

Turns out, changing the Akhilesh Yadav wallpaper on the free HP laptops given out by the UP government recently, does not cause the system to crash. Following reports that claimed the laptops crashed when the students changed the default wallpaper, tech2 got in touch with Vishnu Mohan, the marketing manager with the UP Electronic Corporation Limited – the agency that had distributed the laptops. He told us that changing the default wallpaper on the laptop did not cause the system to crash. Mohan explained that students tried to change the BIOS splash screen that loads on boot, which caused the laptop to crash. “The BIOS image cannot be changed,” he said.

On Monday, Uttar Pradesh CM Akhilesh Yadav handed out free HP laptops to about 10,000 students amidst much fanfare, as part of the government’s laptop distribution scheme. It appears that the UP government had bundled the laptops with a wallpaper of the CM and his father, which the students wanted to change.

When asked what students facing the problem could do, Mohan said, “Alongwith the laptop, the students have received a user manual. It has the numbers for all the service centres they can visit, if they are facing a problem.”

The laptops were given out during an event at Colvin Taluqdar’s College in Lucknow to intermediate students to encourage them to pursue higher studies.

The laptops sport a 14-inch display and are equipped with 500GB hard disk  along with 2GB RAM. It also comes with features like Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and has a battery life of minimum 3 hours. The laptop, in addition to a power slot, comes with 3 USB ports, an HDMI port, media card reader and a microphone port. There’s also a VGA port along with ports for headphones and speakers.

The laptop also comes with a DVD writer and is equipped with Hindi, English and Urdu typing capabilities. To keep it safe from virus, the laptop comes with Microsoft Security Essentials. It also comes with MS-Office Pro Academic 2010. A carry bag and a user manual, too, were provided with the laptops to the students.
