Reliance Jio the subsidiary of RIL has started offering Wi-Fi hotspot services in select locations in India. Reliance Jio has also commenced its mobile network where it plans to offer services on a test-basis.
According to BGR India’s report the company is providing Wi-Fi hotspot services free of charge and that they are currently deployed in Ahmedabad, Vadodara as well as Surat in various locations. The company estimates that around 55,000 devices are utilising its hotspots which can be accessed for a limited period of 72 hours. It also allows users to reactivate their service after expiration for extended use. The company plans to launch 4G wireless services in the coming months along with voice over LTE (VoLTE) support.
The company disclosed that it will utilize the 1800MHz frequency for FDD LTE in 14 markets and 2300MHz for TDD LTE. To add to this it was earlier reported that Reliance plans to roll out broadband internet using optical fiber across 900 cities. This will also enable it to provide a wide range of digital services to various locations across the country. We had earlier reported that the company had announced that it had signed an agreement with Tower Vision where it will share the latter’s mobile infrastructure to offer 4G services.
Reliance Jio have not disclosed the exact duration for which free Wi-Fi hotspots will be made available, but there's a 72-hour limit on one-time usage after which users will have to reactivate the hotspot.
