Reliance Jio grows five times faster than market leader Airtel at 4.5 percent in May: TRAI

According to the highlights released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) in its latest telecom subscription report for the month of May, Reliance Jio turned out be the fastest growing service provider, showing a growth rate of 4.25 percent. This was followed by BSNL which grew at 1.34 percent, while market share leader Airtel grew by 0.76 percent as of 31 May, 2017. The report also pointed how the number of broadband subscribers increased from 284.34 million at the end of April to 291.61 million at the end of May showcasing a growth rate of 2.60 percent. Among the top service providers, the five major players constituted of 88.23 percent share of the total broadband subscribers at the end of May, 2017. [caption id=“attachment_389713” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] Image: TRAI[/caption] Reliance Jio came out on top with a massive 117.34 million with Bharti Airtel at 53.30 million subscribers and Vodafone at 40.43 million subscribers in second and third place respectively. Idea Cellular sat at number 4 with 24.63 million subscribers, while BSNL seemed happy with 21.59 million subscribers at number 5. [caption id=“attachment_389714” align=“aligncenter” width=“640”] Image: TRAI[/caption] Coming to Wireless Broadband, Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd took the number one spot with 117.34 million, Bharti Airtel at 51.21 million, Vodafone at 40.42 million, Idea Cellular at 24.63 million and Reliance Communications at 14.46 million. Other highlights also included the total number of telephone subscribers in India that showed a monthly growth rate of 0.51 percent, jumping from 1198.89 million in April to 1204.98 million in May 2017. Add to this a rural subscription rate that has been rising slowly, yet steadily from 502.90 million to 507.52 million subscribers.
